There is good evidence for the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating hay fever and allergic rhinitis symptoms*, particularly when started a few weeks before the symptoms normally begin. Itchy and streaming eyes tend to respond as well as the nasal symptoms. Acupuncture lacks the unpleasant side-effects of drugs though it can be used alongside these for additional relief.

Whilst it would not be used as the sole treatment for severe allergies or anaphylaxis, it can regulate various aspects of the immune system so can be used for relief from other allergies, including eczema. Asthma medication must never be stopped without the advice of your prescriber, but some people find acupuncture improves their symptoms when used alongside inhalers.
